Why You Should Travel to Thailand During the Rainy Season

Thailand is one of the top travel destinations for solo travelers. It’s known for its beautiful scenery, amazing culture, lovely people, and cheap food and accommodation! But when is the best time to travel to Thailand? This was my biggest question and concern when deciding when to book my trip. Can you travel to Thailand during the rainy season? I’ll answer this very question and show you why Thailand’s rainy season is actually a great time to visit this amazing country!

Thailand’s Seasons:

Before you book your travel to Thailand, it’s important to know when each season is.

  • The Wet Season: May – October
  • The Cool Season: November – February
  • The Hot Season: March – May

Thailand is impacted by both summer and winter monsoon seasons which causes it to be potentially VERY wet and rainy when you visit. But this isn’t necessarily a bad thing! In fact, there’s plenty of reasons why Thailand’s rainy season should be when you plan your trip to this amazing country!

Thailand’s rainy season is considered their “off season.” And a big attraction to it being their “off season” means FEWER TOURISTS!

This leads to a lot of amazing benefits! You’ll have an easier time booking accommodations, plenty of opportunities to go on excursions across the country, and loads of modes of transportation at your disposal!

On top of that, one of the biggest reasons people travel to Thailand (and SE Asia as a whole) is how cheap it is. But during the rainy season most everything is EVEN cheaper than during the peak season!

Depending on how you like to plan your trips, this could be a perfect time to let your spontaneous side shine! During the rainy season, you should have little to no problems with booking last minute places to stay or ferry rides to your next destination. This was, personally, one of my favorite parts of my trip since I could decide to go wherever and stay however long I liked depending on the vibe and the people I was with!

Now I said there are fewer tourists… but this doesn’t mean that there are none! There are still plenty of people for you to meet and plenty of opportunities to be alone too!

I went to some very popular beaches during my month in Thailand and there were countless times that I had practically an entire beach to myself! I’ve never experienced anything like it! Even if there were other people, we all had our own section of the beach which was incredible!

I will caution you, if the sole goal of your trip to Thailand is to lounge on the beaches and tan all day… the rainy season might not be for you! I was able to enjoy plenty of time in the south of Thailand with little to no rain, but some days I was quickly interrupted by a storm rolling in. My suggestion — keep an eye on the locals and the shops/street vendors. They can tell when a storm is coming and pack up a few minutes before it hits! So if you feel the winds picking up, take a quick look around and see what the locals are doing!

Now, a little rain won’t spoil your trip… but I do need to be honest, there were some days with non-stop rain.

Not every day can be perfectly sunny and beautiful, but also the rain really isn’t all day every day either! Out of my first 30 days in Thailand during the rainy season, there were 3-4 days of non-stop rain and that was it.

The thing to note is that the rain usually lasts for an hour or two and then goes away. So as long as you have your sandals on and your raincoat/umbrella you’ll be all set! There are also almost always places to duck under to wait while the rain passes!

If the rain comes during the day, try and find a place to eat or a mall to walk around! And if the rain comes at night, it might be time to have a drink or two at a nearby bar!

The rain is also warm. This isn’t a day in England or a cold winter rainstorm in the US. The rain is actually very enjoyable a lot of the time! It cuts the heat and humidity and can be very refreshing depending on your mood! There were many days where I’ve never appreciated a quick rainstorm more!

Which leads me to my last point… Thailand gets HOT and I mean really hot. During the hot season, temperatures can easily get into 100°F (≈38°C). However, during the rainy season the highs are usually in the mid 80°F (≈27°C).

It’ll still be hot no matter when you’re in Thailand, but at least it becomes more tolerable during the rainy season.

I wasn’t a big fan of rain before going to Thailand, but I now actually really appreciate a warm walk in the rain. There’s something very calming and nice about it (when you’re doing it intentionally). On top of that, even if you’re unlucky and get caught in a storm, once it stops raining you’ll dry off faster than you realize!

I hope this helps with your decision on when you should travel to Thailand! My suggestion would be AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!! Don’t let rainy season be the reason you put your trip off any longer!

For reference, here’s a quick overview on why I think rainy season is a great time to visit Thailand:

  • Fewer Tourists – but still plenty of people to meet
  • Easier access to accommodations, excursions, and transportation
  • Most everything is cheaper
  • Can be more spontaneous
  • Ample alone time – especially on beaches
  • It’s not raining 24/7
  • Thailand isn’t as hot
  • Sometimes it’s nice to take a walk in the rain!

How was the humidity? I know when I was in China in midsummer I was only comfortable when it was raining, but that was more about the humidity amplifying the heat than the actual temperature.

The humidity was fairly high, but I found it to be very manageable! I feel like I was going to sweat a lot with or without humidity though 😅 Most days were so gorgeous, especially after raining the night before!
